I became a lumberjack.

In the contact of foresters in Burgundy, I developed particular techniques to sketch the forms in situ, straight from grapes. In this silvicultural environment, I was brought to meet owners of forest, foresters, local sawmills and agents of the French National Forestry Office. A whole world the existence of which I knew, but which was distant when I practiced as cabinet maker. In my previous activity, the wood was a material; today it is a raw material. A starting point, and also what holds the first place.

This return to the source also pushed me towards the strictest working drawing in the shape. Certainly I was influenced by the architects with whom I worked. But this taste for the minimalism, if he expresses himself in the design of my creations today, is also a principle which applies to the manufacturing process. I adopted a light equipment , without any machine of workshop, and my equipment is globally simpler than that of a small joinery. I use primitive techniques of direct size, the by replacing simply axes by chain saws, but with the objective to create, in a raw material, tamed, contemporary objects.


从家具师到伐木工,我在法国勃垦丁地区的树林里开发出了一套直接在砍伐下的树干上裁剪出家具大致形状的工作方式。在树林原生态的工作环境中,我和当地的树林业主、护林人、锯木厂、法国林业局的官员得到了充分的交流。在我从事装配家具工作的时候我就知道这些人和机构的存在,可是当时他们对我来说是那么的遥远。因为那个时候,树木对我来说只是原材料,而现在树木则成为了我作品的素材,也是最重要的灵感源泉。 回归本源的理念也让我在作品的设计中追求最简单和最纯粹的形状。这种理念或多或少受到了当年和我一起工作过的建筑师的影响。但是我的极简主义设计理念不仅体现在我作品的设计中,也体现在我制作工艺的原则中:不使用任何工厂的器械,我大部分的工具比细木工坊还要简单:刨刀、横口斧。我用电锯代替了斧头,使用最简单、最古老地直接在树干上进行砍伐的技术,在天然原始的材质上创造出一种极富现代感的作品。
